The Williamstown Tree Group would expect the following considerations to be central to the Urban Forest Strategy, Canopy Delivery Plan and a treed urban environment.
Tree sizes maximised. Past Council species selection often small and conservative
Where location demands smaller tree selection, canopy impact must remain a priority
Improved site inspection and analysis for larger trees eg opportunities where no powerlines, large verges
Better strategic planting for function ie seasonal temperatures, north and west sun aspects
Increased focus on planting for immediate neighbourhood livability as well as easier 'remote' locations
Consideration of species selection to include: streetscape character, heritage, biodiversity, proven performance, climate resilience
Strategic use of deciduous and evergreen trees
Multiple street trees per property
Street planting for continuous pedestrian and roadside summer shade
Close collaboration with Capital Works for maximised planting opportunities and tree establisment
Far better planning and design initiatives for challenging streets/ locations
Improved sub-soil preparation and stormwater retention
Minimise hard surfaces and maximise water retentive cool surfaces, including Williamstown street verges
Comprehensively planned and fully resourced post plant care
Better pruning practices to maximise tree canopy cover
Improved young tree protection in 'high traffic' locations
Detailed tree succession plan for Williamstown to moderate ageing tree loss
Retention and protection of all healthy mature trees, including the Norfolk Island Hibiscus
Transperancy of process and increased accountability re any tree removal
Removal of Council documentation mentioning or offering tree removal
All relevant Council leadership and personel to be comprehensively schooled and fully supported in all elements and practices of the Urban Forest Strategy and Canopy Delivery Plan
